Istanbul Shop
This shopwindow displaying fruits, vegetables, Turkish and international groceries is situated on a rather central street near the local main square and transportation hub Schwammendingerplatz. Approaching the shop from the square, the density of shops decreases.
The store, spread across two buildings, ´hides` its dual nature beneath unified canopies. When looking up the shift of materiality from concrete to plaster divides the two facades. Entrances on each side of the corner mark the boundary between the two buildings.
On the building on the left side a concrete canopy, a sunshade and boxes are partially obscuring the view to the metal framed shopwindow. The transparency of the windows allows for a partial view of a storage area.
On the right building the shop is covered by a glass canopy and follows the L-shaped structure. One section is a wall surrounding the entrance and the other section hosts a metal framed shopwindow halfway covered with a blurred window film, minimizing the view to the interior display of groceries.
What sets this shopwindow apart is its extension onto the sidewalk, where shelves and boxes display fruits and vegetables, creating a dynamic connection between the interior of the store and the public space. This clever use of the sidewalk immediately captures the attention of the passerby, transforming the shopwindow into not just a display but an interactive, lively space that engages with the visitor, inviting them to explore the shopwindow and enter the store.
