Franco’s Pizza

The showcase I’ve chosen is an Italian restaurant called Franco’s Pizza Service. Located on a quiet street behind the Oerlikon railway station, it allows passers-by to catch a glimpse of wine bottles, antique objects and furniture inside the restaurant. The window expresses the restaurant’s character, without making the interior space visible.

What first appealed to me about this window is that it sinks into the façade, allowing several depths in relation to the sidewalks. Small niches are created, linking the private space of the restaurant to the public space of the sidewalk. One small niche is used as the entrance of the restaurant and the other is equipped with a cushion and an ashtray, so you can stop and enjoy a drink under cover.

Furtheremore, the duality of this window offers an interesting aspect to the restaurant. The left-hand side of the showcase displays objects of interest to passers-by, while the right-hand side offers customers the chance to eat pizza with a view of the outside.

In winter, the terrace is closed. However, in summer, a small terrace extends along the sidewalk, changing the place into something more pleasant and lively. Then, the focus is no longer on the shop window, but on the terrace.
