Bücherschrank Schwamendingen
The showcase is located at Schwamendingerplatz. The market square is situated in the heart of Schwamendingen. Surrounded by trees and multiple park benches, the space stands in contrast to the busy area surrounding it. You can hear the water from the fountain, the rustling of the leaves, trams driving by, and people talking.
At the rear edge of the space stands this rather unusual showcase. Positioned between two trees and highlighted by a street lamp behind it, you can find a little wooden cabinet.
Although it seems like a random location for a cabinet, it blends in with its surrounding space. At first glance, it appears to be an art piece because it is covered in graffiti. By approaching it, you will come to realize that it is a public bookcase.
The cabinet itself is handmade out of wood, and its construction is very clever. Through the transparent door built out of plexiglass, you can see its contents, and the lopsided roof shelters it from the rain. The location is rather central, which makes it attractive for pedestrians.
The showcase functions as a public library, where people can swap their books for new ones. By taking a closer look, you will find all sorts of things, like novels, games, tour guides, and children’s books. You could say that it is a literary representation of the city and its inhabitants, and it enables the community to exchange their possessions.
