Rotbuchstrasse 1

This shop window is located on Schaffhauserplatz. The square is a district center and an important traffic junction between the city center and Zurich North.

In the center of the square is a stop for the four streetcar lines 7, 11, 14 and 15. There are numerous stores around Schaffhauserplatz, including this shoe store at Rotbuchstrasse 1.

The black shop windows form a kind of semi-circular recess in the facade, but this cannot be felt from the inside. From the inside, the windows form a straight mural. This is achieved by the fact that the windows on the left and right, which are angled inwards from the outside, and the straight windows on the inside create a double window and thus a window display case.

The striking triangular wooden frame shapes on the ceiling and the protruding triangular accentuation at the top center of the display window are striking elements. The ornaments to the left and right of the columns add to the elegance of the gray facade. In general, not only does the recessed frame give the facade depth, but also the black color of the frame.

Also worth mentioning are the steps, which give the impression that the shop window represents an entrance to the interior. However, the sales clerk cleverly places shoe boxes in front of the supposed entrance to signal that it is merely a window. Despite the inviting architecture, the entrance is thus reserved for the eye, while the staged presentation of the goods in the shop window arouses the curiosity of passers-by.
