Wartsaal Wipkingen

This shop window is found right next to the tracks of the Wipkinger Bahnhof, connected to the bustling Röschibachplatz. This square is the place where the neighbourhood meets in bars, cafés and at the weekly sunday market to buy groceries, drink coffee and talk about their lives. At the edge of the carfree space, between the cafés there are some small shops all run by local businesses, giving a very cozy feel to the space. Found beneath the ground floor level of the square above, the shop only fully reveals itself once one has fully descended a set of stairs.

Here the gallery is presented with a large overhanging roof and big glass windows, granting a full view of the gallery’s entry space, although further back the exhibiton is still hidden from sight, only visible through the windows by the stairs. The large windows, framed in metal, rigidly close the space beneath the large roof but at the same time open up the view into the gallery.

It is right at the edge of the busy square above, where one finds a small stairway – with its windows lining the stairs – leading down to the shop window of the Wartsaal Wipkingen. With a large glass door and a small book-basket, people are moved to linger and look.
