Stauffacherstrasse 34

Project by Vasco Beuchle

The entrance to the ‘Raum der Stille’ at Stauffacherstrasse 34, Kreis 4 is found at the back of the St.Jakobs church.

The first element of the entrance is an Artwork called ‘Himmelstreppe’, a staircase coming out of the ground and into the air up to 80cm in height. Since the main part of the entrance is underground, this piece makes the entrance visible to the public. From here the staircase leads down towards a moat. To guarantee the safety of the public, Glass panels ensure that passers-by won’t fall. This creates a framing for the moat.

To further separate the entrance from the public space the moat stretches over a distance of 3 metres. For technical reasons, the door itself is set back 40 cm into the wall, creating a doorsill.

The wall in which the door is let in, is at the same time the backwall of the St.Jakobs church and therefore continues above ground level. The entirety of the entrance cuts into a patch of grass on the elevated foundation of the church itself.
