Stampfenbachplatz 4

Project by Evelyn Ehses

This entrance is in the city center of Zürich, more precisely in the sixth district. Next to it are several stores with large windows. It is located on a main street, so it can be reached by car, bicycle, or public transportation. Nearby is Stampfenbachplatz, a small public place.

At the entrance, the two identical columns made of sandstone that frame the door, are very noticeable. On the one hand, they support the structure of the entrance. On the other hand, they have been placed in a certain way for aesthetic reasons. The columns stand on single concrete blocks, placed at the same height as the top staircase. Inside the block, there is a small hole. The wooden door can be reached by three wide steps. This makes the access very difficult for people with physical disabilities (e.g., wheelchair users). Above the entrance is a green roof-like fabric. Unfortunately, this is not visible in the drawing, otherwise it would have obscured the entire entrance.

The horizontal access to the interior of the building makes the entrance appear more private than other buildings. However, the entrance still seems very public due to the sports store placed within and its location near the main road.
