Schiffbaustrasse 4

Project by Melissa Cammarata

The entrance stands in the center of the so called ‘Industriequartier’ in the city of Zürich. It opens on the eastern façade of the ‘LaSalle Restaurant & Bar’. The building is built mainly out of bricks and iron. The building on the Schiffbaustrasse 4 was one of the first industrial buildings built by the Escher-Wyss company in the area, creating a new city outside the center of Zürich, in which all the industrial activities took place.

The main entrance is a quite small double door made of steel and holds a window for each side. The façade made of glass right above the entrance can become an opening itself, as it was once built to enable the passage of boats, that were once fabricated in the building. The entrance is grand thanks to the windows and the cornice made of bricks as a contour. The bricks are brown and red, the steel is grey and sometimes red too, and then there are also grey stones that add up to the façade as mere decorations.

Right in front of the entrance there is a square with trees and enough space for events such as open-air concerts and other activities to take place.

The dimensions of the façade and the surroundings of the entrance give quite the impression of something grand and important. The building and the entrance both hold a history in themselves, a part of the expansion of the city, and with the passing of time they have become part of the heart of Zürich.
