Schafmattstrasse 34

Project by Margaryta Zimarina

The entrance is part of the HPH building at ETH Hönggerberg. Regarding to the stylistic language, the entrance comprises modern elements and basic geometrical forms. The polygonal shape accentuates the entrance and invites bypassers to enter the building. The windows are arranged in a rectangular grid pattern.

The main passageway leads through the sliding glass door, but there are also smaller doors on the sides, which is intended for many people to be constantly passing through. The façade is mostly made of glass. Because of that the transition between inside and outside seems smooth and not too abrupt. It also allows to see through the windows and observe what’s happening inside.

The place is important in context of daily working and studying life. The atmosphere around the entrance is quite vivid, because some people are at most times standing in front of the building having conversations in between of lectures or working time. Therefore, it does not only serve the purpose of a transit passage. The entrance is situated under a larger canopy, which serves as protection from rain and sun.
