Herzogenmühlestrasse 45

Project by Aron Karrer

This is the entrance to the south wing of the Schule Auhof. The school complex is set back from the street and consists of several wings which enclose a courtyard. The building is constructed out of red bricks and concrete. The doors are made of wood and glass panes. They lead into a vestibule which is connected to the main hallway around the corner.

To the left, a brick wall frames the entrance and separates it from the environment outside of the school complex. Between these walls, a metal railing completes the separation, while at the same time permitting the view out to the lawn and the street. This left wall and a single, blue painted metal column at the bottom right corner support a concrete canopy that covers the entire entrance area.

With its closed walls facing the outside, the entrance struc- ture forms a protective screen and provides the children with a safe playing and learning environment. The covered outdoor area and the vestibule form a threshold space. It funnels the children after the break or when they arrive in the morning. Teachers can stand under the cover of the canopy while the children play. The building has only one story so as not to impose on the children. Its glass doors demonstrate transparency and are welcoming.
