Heimplatz 1

Project by Arno Amez-Droz

It is the main portal of the old art museum in the middle of Zürich city. While at first glance this entrance looks pretty simple, it is fascinating in its details if one gets a closer look. For example, right under the roof in the front one can see an ornament which shows a person riding a pegasus.

To walk inside the museum, one has to first walk into an entrance hall. It somewhat resembles an old temple the way the gabled roof stands on twelve columns. In-between these square columns there are glass windows flooding the entrance hall with light.

It is built of big stone blocks. The individual blocks slightly vary in color from brown to almost grey. The whole entrance is slightly lifted by a socket. Having to take two steps up to a big pedestal to enter makes one feel like entering somewhere sacred.
