Birchstrasse 150

Project by Joël Heller

The ‘Halle 550’ is located in the heart of Oerlikon about 100 meters from the train station. The ‘Halle 550’ was renovated in 2020 and converted into event halls for public events and large gatherings. The building has a transparent glass skin on the front façade facing towards the MFO-Parc.

The connection to the parc is very important because it is the neighborhood’s center. The building opens up towards it though its transparent appearance. Two lift doors that dominate the facade emphasize the inviting public character. Besides the two lift doors there are four discreet entrances into the halls. These entrances are designed to be simple and transparent, thus blending with the facade. The four smaller doorways remain almost hidden from the eye when approached frontally. The northernmost of these four entrances and part of one lift door are shown on the drawing. The door on the side of the building, which is used for deliveries, is also visible.

The entry, as well as the individual windows, is enclosed by a thin, dark gray metal frame. The doorway, however, is slightly offset to the inside of the building, creating a portal to the inside. The door has the width of two window units and is therefore a square. It consists of two door wings, each with a protruding C-shaped door handle. The building creates a new exterior room within the building by removing the skylights, forming an interior courtyard connected by the large gates to the building’s circulation.
