Weinbergstrasse / Sumatrastrasse

Project by Vinzenz Leuppi

The facade can be divided into 3 segments: Ground floor, first floor and the remaining stories that lead up to the roof. Each segment is characterised by material as well as the layout of openings and decorative details.

The ground floor features large windows towards the street. There are two window pairs, each consisting of two large windows and an entry between them. The thick walls are made out of natu- ral grey stone, which have been cut to regular sized cubic blocks. The corners are defined by stacked regular sized quadratric blocks. A little pediment raises the building up by just a step.

The first floor uses stone once again. However, the color of the stone is lighter and the texture is rougher. The blocks have the same height as on the ground floor. One block spans from one window to the next. The windows are organised in regular intervals along the façade. A flat arch embellishes the top of the window opening.

The exterior material for the following three stories is orange brick in a classical brick bond pattern. The windows are arranged precisely above those on the first floor. A window is always framed by a large stone rectangle. The windowsill and the lintel of a win- dow are expressed on the exterior of the façade with a horizontal stone element. The corner is defined by a white corinthian pilaster with flutes rising from the second up to the top of the third story. As of there the pilaster is turns into a monolithic element with no ornamentation whatsoever.
The pitched roof out of regular tiles completes the building.
