Münsterhof / Waaggasse

Project by Lewis Beauchamp

The corner forms part of the Zunfthaus zur Waag, a 17th century building placed at the far end of Münsterhof, a square in the centre of Zürich old town. The building contains a restaurant with outdoor seating, which together with the tourists and the other passers-by, makes for a laid back atmosphere. Whilst one side of the corner serves as the square’s boundary, the other side forms part of an entry and exit point to the square. An alleyway leads away and round to the left, funnelling people out of the square and marking the first viewpoint for those entering.

The building façade is partially made out of light grey Bollinger Sandstone with classical elements. This stone forms the corner and the windows, while the spaces in between are painted in a light blue. The ground is composed of cobblestones of alternating sizes. Small windows line the front side of the building, each one guarded by an iron grid. On the other side of the building is the entrance to a boutique; this has a green door and a window frame with gold-painted lettering. Warm lighting illuminates the store windows, lending an inviting feeling.

On the upper levels, rows of windows with blue shutters set the tone for the rest of the building. A black metal drain pipe runs down the building’s corner. Additionally, a large street lamp hangs from the side and a road sign stands slightly offset from the corner, together forming a reference to the city’s infrastructure.
