Limmatquai / Münsterbrücke

Project by Jonathan Bitterli

This corner is part of the well known Helmhaus. The corner has an arcade at its bottom. The arcade consists of massive rectangular columns connected with arches. They are made of stone and have simplified column reliefs on it. At the bottom there is also a base. The upper facade consists of two stories. The colours of the stones is natural, ochre and grey. The first upper floor has a higher room height than the second upper floor. The facade of the upper floors are fettled and white. Moreover, the frames of the windows and the roof overhang are also made of unpainted stone and the frames of the first floor are decorated with window stills. Like the column relief, all the decor is quite simplified. The windows on the upper floors have green shutters. The eaves around the building are decorated with cuts. The roof consists of two stories which are opened through lucarnes, which are made of wood, but at first sight they look like stone because they are painted in a grey colour. The roof is hipped and covered with bricks.

Compared to other buildings in Zürich the Helmhaus is not as tall as them. Another speciality about the Helmhaus is the fact that the arcade is open so that pedestrians can walk through it. Today the building is a museum for contemporary Swiss art. Special about the Helmhaus is that it is connected with the Wasserkirche. The roads that passing the corner are one from the Münsterbrücke and the other one is the Limmatquai the with a tram rail.
