Badenerstrasse / Cramerstrasse

Project by Lida Freudenreich

The chosen artefact houses a barber shop on the ground floor and private apartments and a dentist on the floors above. The big shop windows and the entrance show what is happening inside.

Generally a corner is not a place where you stand and watch. You either walk past, heading somewhere else or you enter the door. Both ways the opposite of rest and motion occurs. Customers inside are usually not in big motion. They are watching the movements going on outside and they are not watched, but only perceived by people who are on the go. This opposite is reflected in the design of the corner. The rounded balconies contrast the straight wall and the rectangular windows. The two straight-lined steps, that elevate the shop level from the street level, create an additional separation between outside and inside. They meet with a curved glass window, which is bending outwards but facing inwards and therefore forming a lead to the main door, inviting the customer into the shop.

Contrary to this, the rounded corners of the balconies on first and second floor are facing outwards. Hence they repel what is happening outside, making the inside completely private.

Another contrast is created by the different colours of the facade. While the lower level is plastered in grey, the rest of the building features a yellow/beige tone. It also features smaller windows: another separation between public and private. The grey colour is repeated in the windowframes. This induces a link between the two parts, making sure the building still appears as an integral whole.
