Ausstellungsstrasse/ Ackerstrasse

Project by Burak Alp Kaya

This corner belongs to a building, which connects the Ackerstrasse with the Ausstellungstrasse. It has an exposed brick masonry facade.

When the corner is observed from outside, the first thing that stands out is the entrance. This cylinder shaped metal element is directed towards the meeting point of these two streets, which can be interpreted as an effort to connect Ackerstrasse and Ausstellungsstrasse in a stronger way. Hence, both streets are equal important to this building. The entrance opens itself to an open space, which looks like an extension of the pavement, penetrating into the building. This special space is defined by steps and four large columns. Thus, it does not have exactly the same characteristics as the pavement, but can be understood as a transition space between the public exterior and the more private interior. This space is still a part of the building, as it is defined inside of these four massive columns.

Further from the entrance, the corner itself is also highlighted as a volume, as it is visually separated from the other two wings of this brick building by adding niches located next to the outer two columns of the entrance space.

Instead of a sharp corner with two faces, the building has a third face directed towards the meeting point of the two streets just like the entrance, which brings Ackerstrasse and Ausstellungsstrasse together in a softer manner than a sharp edge would do.
