Zeunerstrasse 5

Project by Yufei Li

These balconies are a space of refuge from the busy city: they are faced away from the main street and towards a large park.

The balcony adds a sense of elegance to an otherwise massive building, achieved by the balustrade being of thin steel rods.

To enter the balcony, you need to squeeze yourself through a narrow door. Thus, there isn’t any strong relationship to the interior due to that. Yet, since the doors are ceiling-high glass panes, it isn’t completey separated from the inside. When you’re on the balcony, a glance back permits you to see what is going on inside the house.

A tall climbing tree adorns the left side of the balconies. This adds to the sense of privacy, as you’re partly shielded from the line of sight from outside. A lot of pots with plants can fit onto the small balcony, thus it feels as if you’re in a small jungle. If you need to get away from people, then stepping onto the balcony already brings you closer to nature.

Still, even if it may feel more like a piece of nature, it is a semi-public space. There is no wall between you and the outside, only a delicate balustrade. You can see the people outside, and they can see you. If you choose to do so, you can use it as a means of self-expression: you can hang flags with political messages about upcoming votings of people’s initiatives on the railing.
