This balcony is located at the busy intersection of the Winterthu- rerstrasse and the Kinkelstrasse on the first floor. The building is one of so many other alike houses built in the early 20th century in Zurich‘s trending Kreis 6.
The rather small balcony does neither have a table nor chairs on it. The quite dominant roller shutters can be closed to separate the inside form the outside. This could be a way to isolate the apartment from the street‘s hustle and bustle. The balcony does not make the impression to be a spot to linger but rather to be more of a niche to get some fresh air after a long working day – a place to calm down and observe the busy life at the intersection out of the building and out of distance from the owners’ safe place.
The massive and impenetrable-seeming façade – house plinth and orange brick walls – is contrasting with the quaint and filigree forged iron railing of the balcony. This subtle but key architectural detail is a reflection of the contrast between the urban outdoor life and the probably rather cosy inside of the apartment.
