Uraniastrasse 18

Project by Elia Trachsel

The peculiarity of the balcony is strongly connected to the building, in which he is located. This is the case because the corner is higher than the surrounding parts of the building, resulting in a tower like structure.

Besides the dimensions of the building, its facade also plays an important part when it comes to the question, how the balcony is distinguished and accentuated. The facade seems to split the building in an upper part and a lower part. The lower part consists of two square columns and a window front between them. The windows in the upper part, on the other hand are much narrower and generally smaller. The reason for that are two additional columns.

Furthermore, the upper part of the building is once again separated in two smaller parts. In the lower part the additional columns are cubic and the windows have an arc, while in the upper part the windows are rectangular and the columns are round. The balcony is placed directly at the transition section of these two upper parts and therefore functions as some sort of connector or translator between them.

At the bottom surface of the balcony, an additional structure can be found which not only guarantees the safety of the building but once more integrates the balcony into the facade more seamlessly. The balcony also sits at least two meters higher than the balconies of the surrounding buildings. The balconies above, in the same building, are set back and therefore separated from the tower.
