Streulistrasse 16

Project by Livio Giuliani

The balconies are part of a three-story residential building near the Römerhof in Kreis 7. The building is clearly divided into a base area of the mezzanine, a middle section with the three residential floors and an roof part with an attic apartment. With the balconies, the building forms the actual street front as part of a row of houses on the neighborhood street. The balconies thus create a clear relationship of the interior of the apartment to the street as a public space.

Looking at the construction of the facades, one can see that the balconies are placed in front of the mural facade and have their own steel girder structure.

Four slim cast iron columns stand on the massive base of the building, supporting the two upper balcony levels and the final canopy. The column arrangement creates two narrower perimeters and one wider center bay in the balcony space, which responds to the balcony doors of the apartments and lends symmetry.

Characteristic for the balconies are also the filigree railings, which create a high transparency and openness. Formed with floral shapes, a differentiated ornamentation emerges from close up, which refers to the time of the Art Deco style.

Despite the limited depth of the space, a lounger and other garden furniture, especially on the upper balconies, indicate regular use. The roof protects from rain and is the sunshade for apartments behind. Nevertheless, due to its openness to the street, one is protected and secure, but also exposed.
