The balconies are located at a back road connecting Stadelhofer- strasse to Bellevue. Due to the rather restrained design of the building, it fits itself into the cityscape of Kreis 1. On the facade facing St. Urbangassse there’s three balconies from the first to the third floor and one terrace on the top floor. All of them exist separately, above one another.
Although outside, the concrete walls hide what could happen in this space. Consequently, it seems to become part of the private inside. The metal railings indicating free space for flowerpots are an attempt to bring life to the balconies, while at the same time serving as fall protection.
The majority of the tenants inhabiting the space on the inside aren’t living there. Space is used for offices by doctors, lawyers and insurances mostly. The kind of use of space gives evidence to the liveliness of the balconies. They are put to use almost only for taking breaks, while also serving spatial aspects of the façade.
The people on the balconies can observe the bustling life around the house on street-level. Many people come to the area around the Sechseläutenplatz and Bellevue from outside the city to enjoy the lake and many shopping possibilities that are located there. Thus, the balconies form secluded and yet very connected threshold space above the busy streets of Kreis 1.
