Seefeldstrasse 65

Project by Leonie Mischler

The selected balcony is located at the intersection of Seefeldstrasse and Florastrasse in Kreis 8 in Zürich.

The older building, which serves as the location for the Association for the Blind School Zurich, is the smallest in the area with its two floors and therefore catches the eye directly. The balcony is located on the second floor and serves as a roof over the entrance. It is supported by four wide columns and thus appears very massive. A wide, robust railing is used as a fall protection, which, just like the columns, was built of stone.

Parts of the balcony railing and the massive floor flow seamlessly into the facade, giving the impression that the balcony grows directly out of the facade and is an integral part of the building. The balcony does not differ from the facade in terms of material either. A uniform image is created.

The balcony faces the Seefeldstrasse and is clearly visible from the pedestrian zone, as it is not protected by trees and bushes. The street is very busy, there are many people on the way and the tramline 2 and 4 run in front of the house. The balcony looks a bit exposed and hardly used. Maybe because it is so publicly visible from the street, because the house is not a residential building but an office building, or because the balcony measures only c.a. 4 m2. Every now and then a smoker visits the unfurnished balcony, but nothing more.

Access is through a high balcony door, which is designed in the same shape as the windows. At the threshold you have to take a small step up to get to the balcony. From the outside it is not possible to see how the inside takes place in the building.
