Röslistrasse 8

Project by Romi Bassler

The balcony is located in a street corner near a puplic space called the Schaffhauserplatz (Street which leads from Zurich directly to Schaffhausen, Kreis 6). It is part of a residental complex in the calm Unterstrass-Quarter.

The design of the whole building is simple; for example, the facade is made out of a beige plaster, which gives the surface almost no texture and can only be seen by standing close to the building.

There are 4 square balconies built exactely the same way on this building. They are about the size of 2-3 square meters: only a small number of people can fit. The balconies are painted white and decorated with diagonal metall bars.

Because only a few people can fit on the balconies, it is clear that these balconies were only built to give the residents a little outside space, so they are rather functional than formal. Most of the residents are using the balconies for their plants such as a herb garden or flowers.

Only the ground floor does not own a balcony, because it is connected directly to the street. Due to a bush, the first floor is more hidden. The 4 floors are equal and none of them is emphasized.

The balconies are quite exposed to the streetcorner and leave no room for privacy, it is a rather harsch connection to the outside world. This is emphasized by the fact, that all the shutters are closed.
