Römerhofplatz 5

Project by Andrea Merol

Located in Zurich’s district Kreis 7, these balconies are part of the building at the Römerhofplatz. They serve as decoration of the building and they should not be walkable balconies. The lower balcony is a bit more massive than the upper one. A stone material was used to build the lower one, while the upper one is made of metal. The railing of the lower balcony is made of stone and between the blocks of stone, it is filled with metal and slightly decorated. The banister of the upper balcony is made of several metal arches. It appears to the viewer as if the upper balcony is lighter and more delicate than the lower one, and thus he focuses on the lower one. The focus of this façade is therefore on the lower, more massive balcony. Looking from the streets, it’s hard to see into these balconies. The higher one is designated much more open. The arches of the windows reinforce this impression.

It is difficult to tell whether the balconies are accessible or not, but the small windows and the size of the balconies themselves suggest that they are not accessible and therefore should be ostentatious. Since the building houses a bank and other companies, the balconies are not integrated into the everyday life of these people and there is no point in being actively used.
