Rennweg 36

Project by Lukas Fritschi

Located in the center of Zürich’s old town just a block away from the Limmat we find the Rennweg. It is a pedestrian zone similar to many others in Zürich. The house at Rennweg 36 sticks out from its surroundings. It is very narrow yet taller than its neighbours and its blue façade create a playful, inviting aura.

The balconies at are made of solid, approximately 20 cm thick, hewn stone slabs. They are each supported by five curved stone supports. Nevertheless, they do not appear heavy, as they have an ornate cast iron railing that forms a clear contrast. They are richly decorated and play well with the blue facade and the planting of the balconies. The rectangular balconies are located on the lower two floors. This is evidence of a time when there were no lifts and the lower floors were reserved for wealthier residents. In contrast, the top floors have only small windows without balconies or many ornaments. Today, there is a boutique on the ground floor and the balconies are used to let the green thumb play. Through the traces of live left on them, they invite to stay and offer both the residents a cosy lounge with a connection to the outside and a radiate a relaxing aura for the pedestrian zone below.
