Rämistrasse 23

Project by Max Bärtsch

The facade of the “Schauspielhaus Pfauen” contains one big balcony above the entrance. On the building are several balconies designed in the same style, however balconies are only spread over one floor, which leaves the upper and lower facade without balconies. What they have in common are the windows, the porches above them and the ornaments on those.

The main balcony is supported by two elegant columns. Between those are the entrance with a round top and just below the main balcony there are two peacocks hammered into the facade that resemble the name of the theatre. The balcony itself is supported by machined struts placed in between the corners. The same concept of design was used on the other balconies all over the building. All of them also have two small columns to separate the windows.

Straight above the main balcony on the top of the façade there’s a big porch with a lot of ornaments and decorative elements which give the building a majestic appearance.

In front of the balcony is a tram station and on the other side of the street there is the well-known Kunsthaus Zurich. Apart from the Kunsthaus the theatre is also the only old-fashioned building in around the block.

Fun fact about the theatre is that until 1938 it was completely private until it was auctioned, and the “Neue Schauspiel AG” was established.
