Reinhardstrasse 7

Project by Joris Weiss

The three balconies can be found in a side street right next to one of the main roads of Kreis 8, the Seefeldstrasse. It is a residential area, which is more intimate than the public transit axis it resides next to. Still there are signs of commercial activity: some small businesses (such as a tiny art gallery, restaurant or garage) are spotted throughout, livening up the space.

The balconies are above a hair salon and belong to the apartments on the upper floors. The windowsills are made of concrete and extend beyond the windows where they merge with the balconies, forming a kind of cornice. The railing is massive, extruding from the walls with the same beige plasterwork.

The walls behind the balconies are pushed back slightly, giving back some privacy to the threshold space. This is important, as the location of the balconies makes them quite exposed in relation to their environment. They have a strong presence in the immediate surroundings (because of their materialization and position).

The balconies are located on the southern facade of the building, where they receive a lot of sunlight throughout the day. There are flower boxes hinting at a regular usage of the space. The house on the opposite side of the street recedes where the balconies are located. Still there is not much of a view on either balcony because the house is located right in the centre of Kreis 8 with taller buildings all around.
