The balconies belong to the retirement center Herzogenmühle in Zürich. The building has three floors. On the first floor is the entrance and common rooms. On the two upper floors it has apartments. Each apartment has access to a small, half round balcony, which faces west. This allows the residents a view of the street and the surrounding apartment buildings. The small distance to the neighboring balcony allows an exchange between neighbors.
The balconies consist of a cantilevered circular concrete slab. The sturdy metal railing allows the elderly residents to hold on and also provides privacy from the street. Each balcony is equipped with a curtain, which can be fully closed. Access to the balcony is possible through a sliding window door.
The protruding rain gutters are striking. They are also made of concrete, like the balcony floor. When it rains, the water can drip down.
