Färberstrasse 27

Project by Paula Kern

If one is at Färberstrasse 27 in Zürich’s Kreis 8, one sees a largely uniform building, which, however, is given a playful character by balconies of different sizes and arrangements around a tower-like projection.

The balcony on the first floor leads once around the tower, but is hardly usable due to its narrow width. The smaller balconies on the building side are used with a small table and chairs, while the round balcony around the projection serves only a decorative purpose. The balconies on the first floor are just as narrow as on the first floor and do not go around the projection. As on the first floor, use is very minimal, with a maximum of two chairs occupying almost the entire space.

In contrast to the balconies on the first two floors, there is one balcony, which is not only narrow but also small, directly on the projection. The ornate railing and its bay-like appearance give it a certain charm. It is a real eye-catcher, because in contrast to the high massive building it has a filigree fairy-tale kind.

The floor tiles are made of stone, which goes well with the natural stone façade. With the orientation to the southeast, you have sun in the morning hours, which comes from the lake. The balcony and thus also the interior of the house seem distanced from the city by the high stories, the fence, the closed curtains or the lowered shutters, which suggests a great desire for privacy.
