This set of balconies decorates the façade of a block, which is situated in a residential area next to the A3 motorway. The balconies are facing the street and in the general direction of the motorway. The building is U-shaped and embraces a green courtyard in the rear.
The balconies are part of private flats, and therefore they are only used by the inhabitants and their guests. Some inhabitants grow their plants, some smoke cigarettes, and others just use the balcony as an additional storeroom. The construction is mostly made of concrete, only the small side panels are made of some kind of metal. An interesting characteristic of these balconies is the imbalance between the right and left set. In comparison, the right set is twice as wide and consequently twice as spacious. There is also a vertical offset that slightly elevates the right set. There is no interaction between the left and right side inhabitants. They are as close as they could be but separated by a thick concrete wall. Additionally, the wall serves as a support for the balconies.
As a mediator between private and public space the balconies are designed to maintain the privacy of the inhabitants in the front, the inhabitants can watch the public space, but the opposite is not possible. .Concrete walls cover the view from below and the front of the balconies looks like an extension of the wall behind but without windows. The extended wall separates outside from inside.
