The set of Balconies at the apartment building located in Brüggliäcker 11 in Zürich are mainly constructed in concrete and wood. They were built in 2012 and consist of three storeys, so that the character of the traditional surrounding houses is preserved.
However, they are characterized by their spaciousness and simplicity, which result in a modern-like appearance that contrasts with the traditional and modest surroundings, transforming thus the streetscape entirely. The balconies are used as a place of leisure, which can be identified by the furniture placed there. When standing on the balcony and looking at the outside it is possible to identify a spacious plot that seems to serve as a parking space for the cars of the inhabitants of the building.
As for the shape of the balconies, they are long, wide corridors, that cover the complete length of the façade which is facing the East. They possess a roof that covers them fully and that, in some cases, corresponds to the floor of the balcony above. The roof is held by long columns that, due to their narrowness, do not take up much space on the balconies. There is also to find a metal upper railing attached to the walls of the balcony that serves as a holder for curtains. The latter are thought to be used as separators between the neighbour’s balconies, allowing thus the freedom of turning them into private or public spaces, when the owner decides so.
