Börsenstrasse 14

Project by Lisa Tognola

This balcony is located at Kreis 1, more precisely at Börsenstrasse 14, in a very important area of Zurich. It is a classic balcony of the 20th century, characterized by many decorative elements reminiscent of a classical temple. It is in fact composed of columns, poles and shelves all very decorated. The columns are doubly domed and also contain many details that make it rich in decoration. Also, the poles have numerous decorative effects, such as the different size of the base and the top of the center, which is composed of a worked stone. In addition, the balcony is supported by these very worked corbels, which are very reminiscent of a decoration of a chapiter. The walls have structures similar to capitals, filled with many decorations such as grooves that closely resemble a column.

All these decorative elements just analyzed, elevate the aesthetics and magnificence not only of the balcony, but also of the building. But it is not only a decorative element, it has a double functionality: although small it is also habitable. In fact, this type of balcony can be defined as an extension of the living room.

In ‘900 people began to want to expose themselves, to be looked at (hence the motivation of the size of the balcony). Being a very small balcony the use of it today is reduced. You can neither eat or train, but you can for example relax or smoke a cigarette.
