Bahnhofstrasse 61

Project by Joel Keller

The depicted balcony is located, in the heart of Zurich at the Bahnhofstrasse. Usually it is noisy there, mostly because of the many people that walk along the street and the tram station Rennweg that is located right in front of it. On the ground floor a store for luxurious watches and jewelry can be found which makes it a classical representation for the whole Bahnhofstrasse. The house shows three different balconies on three different stories. The higher up the balcony the smaller it becomes and the more private as well. In general, you don’t really notice them while walking through the street because the first floor has a story height of four meters. In general, the balconies don’t invite to remain outside for a longer time, because there isn’t much furniture, plants, or decoration. Most likely they are used to breath some fresh air, watch the passing crowd and then go back inside. The appearance of the building speaks of two languages in particular. The facade on the ground floor is mainly built of iron which leads back to the industrialization. Whereas the upper floors show some traditional architectural motives such as ionic half columns and massive stones (Werkstein) for a noble appearing which reminds of the epoch of classicism
