Bachwiesenstrasse 117

Project by Magdalena Klotz

The balcony is part of a large, oblong residential building. The building is one of three of its kind. It is situated in a quiet street. The balcony itself is on the second floor, facing the street. It is, same as the building, one of many. Two additional balconies of the same type are located in the same vertical line, while this vertical composition returns at five additional parts of the building on the same side facing westwards, and twice on the rear site.

The balcony appears shut and defensive. The area open to the outside is very small. The parapet is high, and a low- hanging sunblind allows to reduce the opening to a minimum. Additionally, trees and bushes block the sight from the street. This configuration, reinforced by the height of the balcony and the distance to the neighbouring buildings, causes the inhabitants not to see much of the life on the street nor in the surrounding apartments. For the passers-by, in turn, it is almost impossible to see what is happening on the balcony. Additionally, they are prevented from gaining interest in the life inside the buildings by the conveyed aloofness. The defensiveness is imposed by the robust and massive construction made of concrete. This setting creates two separate spaces – public street and private housing, preventing interaction and a lively atmosphere. The reason for the design choice might have been the aim to satisfy the longing for privacy of the inhabitants in a densely populated and conformist environment.
